China

Chinese history spans thousands of years, spanning the early habitation by Peking Man 300,000 to 780,000 years ago, the 4,000 year-old Xia Dynasty, the establishment of a unified Chinese state under the "First Emperor" Qin Shi Huang in 221 BC, to modern day China.

One of the great cradles of civilization, China was one of the few to invent writing, alongside the Mesopotamians, Egyptians and Mayans.

    The Chinese Zodiac
    Chinese astrology can be traced back more than 4,000 years ago when Emperor Yao ordered court astronomers to create a calendar so people would know when to plant and sow. 2,000 years later during the Tang dynasty (AD 618-907), astrology gained popularity when court officials were ordered to construct a Chinese almanac or Tung Shu. The almanac listed auspicious days to open a business, marry, embark on a journey or make other personal decisions.

    There are 12 signs in the Chinese Zodiac: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Ram, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Boar . People born under a certain sign will inherit some of the personality of that animal. Thus, those born in the year of the Tiger are courageous and dignified, like the Tiger, while those born in the year of the Dog are loyal and devoted, like the Dog.
